Why start preparing now for MIT?

MIT is an institute, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, not one more general university. Mathematics, the sciences, and the fact of building something are prepared from 6e to the bac, with no promise of admission.

MIT is not one more name on a list of general universities.

It is an institute. The full name is Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It is in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the United States. It is not the University of Cambridge, in the United Kingdom. The city carries the same name. The institution, the country, and what the file has to show are not the same. Mixing them up, in a conversation between parents, points the preparation at the wrong place.

Your child is not sending a file there this year. The useful time starts in 6e (Grade 6) and runs to the last year of secondary school. At MIT, that time has a content: mathematics, the sciences, and signs that the child makes something or goes deep into a question. The bac, or the GCE if that is your end-of-school diploma, comes at the end of that stretch. It does not replace it.

An institute turned toward the sciences and toward making

Families know MIT for science, engineering, and a way of learning by doing. That is not a reputation to recite at dinner. It is an indication about the file. A pupil who has never held a scientific question over several years will be hard to read here, even with good memories of school and a sincere wish.

The Familles strip invites families to aim at MIT, in the United States. Aiming at this institute means accepting that bar. It is not adding a known name next to other names. The reason is not fame. The reason is the kind of education, and the kind of proof it supposes before the application.

A management school inside MIT is a later door, not the subject of this article.

The bar is mathematics over years

It shows in the school record, not in a statement of intent. Mathematics is not recovered at the last moment if it has been avoided. Nor are the sciences. A child in a francophone system can be at ease explaining a lesson, and more fragile as soon as a problem asks for time and a method. MIT will read that solidity. It will not read a general wish to become an engineer, formulated by the adults.

We do not lock the career at eleven. We do not choose a branch in the child's place. We keep up the subjects that make a scientific path possible later, if that path remains theirs. If they move away from it, the grades show it. We do not cover that distance with a better-told story.

Beside the school record, what helps this file shows that the child builds, or that they go to the bottom of one thing. A build taken up again and improved. A program corrected until it holds. A classroom question pushed further than the exercise. The form depends on what they have at hand, at home, not on a laboratory they do not have. Five "scientific" labels copied from a list show themselves. One thing held over time shows differently.

The American file is there; it does not replace the bar

MIT remains a selective American reading. The holistic layer exists: the path over years, the activities, the essays, the recommendations. It does not stand in for mathematics and the sciences. It blocks another illusion: believing that one very good term, or one isolated figure, tells the story of the pupil.

Making, for a child in 6e, is not an internship in a place they cannot reach. It is a habit already possible. The parent often sees it without naming it as preparation. An object repaired, a problem taken up again the next day, a responsibility in a school club. We do not ask them to stack activities so the page looks full. We look at what lasts, and at what a teacher could describe without inventing.

Academic English belongs to the same patience. Teaching is followed in that language. Following it often supposes a C1 level. No score is written in advance in this text. English is built the way mathematics is built: over years, not in a last-minute revision.

End-of-secondary diplomas do not compare as they stand, from one country to another. The SAT is a common measure, often present in American files, for crossing that difference. It does not re-rank your bac or your GCE. It makes them readable next to other paths, for the time of the comparison.

We are not restating here what the Top 50 means, nor the calendar for sending the file: Why aim for the Top 50 and After Liwaza, how a child enters.

What an adult can confirm, and what they cannot

A useful recommendation says what the adult saw: a progression, a way of returning to a problem, a responsibility kept. It does not say that the child "is made for MIT." Essays, later, will rest on the same facts. If the facts are thin, the text will be thin too, whatever the quality of the French or the English around it.

A MIT student is not an engineer already hired

Even a serious scientific file can receive a no. Admission is never a given. Being a student at MIT, if that happens, is not a job at Tesla, nor an engineering career signed before classes. It is not a visa. We do not promise it. The work makes an application readable for this institute. It does not sign the professional sequel, nor the right to remain in the country.

If the place does not come, mathematics, the sciences, and English stay with the child. They can serve another selective university where people are trained to design and to make. The heading will have been MIT. The benefit, if there is one, will be first in what the child knows how to do, not in the letter of reply.

The diagnostic starts from the problem they cannot yet solve

We look at this child, not at the picture of the institute: where their mathematics stand, how they react in front of an exercise they do not already know how to do, what English they have for a slightly long instruction, and whether they go deep or move from one idea to another.

From 6e to the end of secondary school, the time left changes the answer. We do not hand you a program to copy week after week. We say what it is still honest to aim at, at MIT, in the United States, from your child's real level.
