NYU is New York. The name of the city often arrives before the file.
A parent says NYU because they see the city. The child, from 6e (Grade 6) to the bac or the GCE, nevertheless has nothing to send this year. They have a school record to hold, English to build, activities to let last. New York University is a private university, in New York, in the United States. The entry we are talking about is a first degree, after secondary school. The city is the image one keeps. It is not the application one reads.
When the city steps in front of the school record
What parents picture is often the energy of New York, the idea that studying there means living in that city. The image is understandable. It does not say how a university compares two teenagers who come from two school systems that do not resemble each other.
NYU reads a US-style file, in the holistic sense: the years of the school record, English, activities, what adults who know the child can say about them, and the way the child presents themselves without a costume. None of those pieces is filled in by the name of the city. A child can want New York and still have, on paper, only wishes.
It is not the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia: another city, another university, and a different page from this one.
The file is held from 6e to the bac
The school record is read over time. From 6e to the end of lycée, grades show a schooling, not a last-minute jolt. They matter. In this kind of file, they are not alone. An isolated average, even a strong one, does not tell the years.
English is for following classes once there. Many programmes ask for a high level, often a C1. We do not promise that score. We prepare English over time, with teachers, from the moment the family enters the work. A child who reaches the year of the bac without academic English does not manufacture it over the holidays, even if the city appeals to them.
Activities count through the years. A practice held over time, progress, a responsibility, something carried through: sport, art, debate, a project, a commitment in lycée or in collège. None of that is a compulsory list, and none of it is invented to “look real” at the last moment. An activity that lasted is visible. An activity set down for show is visible too. The parent starts from what the child already does, not from a catalogue.
The SAT is, for this file, a common measure between baccalaureate systems that do not compare as they stand. School grades, alone, do not place one school system beside another. The SAT does not say that one bac is weaker than another. It offers a shared language, in reading, in writing, in mathematics. We do not promise a score. We also do not write here the dates on which to register. If the university asks for another test, it is the test it asks for. For NYU, the point that is useful to parents is this: the SAT is the common measure, beside the school record and the activities, not in their place.
Two pages are enough for the frame; we do not rewrite them: Why aim for the Top 50 and After Liwaza, how a child enters.
What remains once the city is set aside
Once the name of the city is set aside, the questions are ordinary. Does the school record have consistency, from 6e through lycée? Can the English carry university study? Do the activities have a real duration? Can the SAT, when the time comes, serve as a common measure, because it will not have been discovered in the last term?
NYU does not ask the child to be from New York already. It asks for a file that can be compared with other files. When personal essays enter that file, they speak about the real child. They do not replace the years with a description of the city. We do not give a method for writing them. We say that you do not write a schooling in a week, and that you do not perform it either.
A parent names NYU. The work, from 6e, is still the file. The diagnostic says whether this name is realistic for this child. Wanting the city does not settle it.
Naming NYU does not give the place
No admission is guaranteed. Preparing for a long time does not buy a place at New York University. If the place is not there, a file held seriously can serve another selective university in the same set. The years are not a stake you lose on the day of an answer.
Studying at NYU is not a job at Tesla, nor a job in a company in the city. Education is the time of study. Being hired is another story, which no one here signs in advance. We do not promise a visa for the United States. The conditions for entering and for staying are not decided in this article.
We do not give a numbered position. We do not say that NYU occupies such-and-such a place in a ranking. A parent may care about this name. We do not invent a number to justify it. The glow of New York is not the argument. The argument is a file started early enough to be true, from 6e through to the bac.
See whether this name holds for this child
We do not start from an image of the city. We start from the class: 6e, 4e, lycée, the year of the bac. We look at how the child learns, where their English stands, what they already do with consistency, and whether an aim toward this university makes sense for them, not only for the idea parents have of it.
The diagnostic answers a clear question: NYU, for this child, is it realistic? It does not replace the SAT, or a public exam. It does not hand back a schedule to follow alone. It puts the city back behind the file, in the place that is its own.
If you say NYU, the next step is to see the child who would do the studying, not the poster of the city.
