When a parent says Penn, they sometimes think Wharton. The university is the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia.
Your child, in 6e (Grade 6) or in lycée, is not applying to Penn this year. There is no file to submit between two school meetings. The bac, or the GCE, is still to come. What can start is the work that will make an undergraduate file readable when the time comes: years of results, English, activities held over time, and a common measure between baccalaureate systems that do not look alike.
The university, in Philadelphia
The University of Pennsylvania is a private university, in Philadelphia. For a child after the bac, the name means a first degree at this university: letters, sciences, engineering, other faculties. We do not choose the faculty at twelve here. We name the institution the parent named, and we look at whether it is realistic for this child.
New York University is in New York: Penn, in Philadelphia, is a different city. Pennsylvania State University, often called Penn State, is yet another institution. The word Penn, in this page, means the University of Pennsylvania.
Wharton is this university’s business school. We mention it only as a possible later door, if the project becomes that, years after a first degree. Today’s work is about the university, for a child who does not yet have the bac. This page does not describe a business curriculum, or a career, or a way to get recruited.
The American undergraduate file is read broadly. School results over several years, English, activities, the texts the child writes about themselves, recommendations: the university looks at a person growing up, not at a single Terminale mark. That takes time. It is not assembled in the year the name is discovered.
Why begin during the school years
The report card is built term after term. An average pulled out at the last moment tells little. What these universities can read is a schooling: subjects held, progress, ordinary years as well as strong ones. Waiting until Terminale to “get started” leaves less schooling to show. Entering later is sometimes still possible. The diagnostic says so, without pretending the missing years are still there.
Academic English is part of that time. Many programmes at this level ask for a high standard, often a C1. We do not promise that score. We build English so the child can follow a class, read, and write in the language of the studies, if this name remains theirs.
The SAT serves as a common measure between baccalaureate systems. Reading, writing, mathematics: one exam, for children from systems that cannot be compared on lycée marks alone. It does not say that one bac is inferior to another. It gives a common language. If the university asked for something else when the time came, we would prepare what it asks. We do not turn this page into an exam calendar.
Activities stay in the file because they show duration. A project returned to, a responsibility, a way of working that belongs to the child: that is seen over years, not on a line added at the end. We do not supply a list to copy here. The right activity is the one this child can hold.

You named the University of Pennsylvania. The diagnostic says whether the name is realistic for your child. The family’s money is looked at when the project becomes concrete, with the rules of the university and of funders. None of that is settled today.

What stays outside this page
We do not tell a career here, or a city of employers, or the way a business school chooses its students later. Wharton was named so that it would not take up the whole space. It does not become the plan of a child in collège. If, well after a first degree, the project turns toward a business school, that question will be asked again then, with an adult and a life already lived. Not with a 6e pupil.
Philadelphia is not a life plan to fix now either. It is the university’s city. The country is chosen with the track and with the money, later. Preparing an undergraduate file does not mean the child will leave for the United States. It means that, if this name stays realistic, today’s schoolwork has a point.
Without a guarantee
Admission is never guaranteed. Years of report cards, English, and activities do not produce a letter. The university decides. A refusal is a possible outcome, including after serious work. That work still leaves a file easier to read for another selective university in the same set.
Studying at the University of Pennsylvania, if admission comes, is not a job at Tesla. Being a student is a place in an education. It is not a post. The career, if it comes, comes afterwards, and nobody signs it at the same time as the name of the school.
We do not promise a visa. An admission, even when received, is not a right to enter a territory. The rules are checked in the year the question arises.
The diagnostic says whether the name holds
We do not start with Wharton. We do not start with a list of tests to take alone at the weekend.
We start with a diagnostic: where your child stands, how they reason, how they learn, their English, their interests. That session is to see whether the University of Pennsylvania is a realistic horizon for them, as a first degree, not as a logo. It does not replace a public exam. It does not hand you forms to fill in this year: there are none for them to fill in now.
If you said Penn while thinking of a business school, the first clarification is the one at the start. The university first. The rest, only if the project becomes that, much later.
